REVIEW BOARD (IRB)
Understanding the Role and Purpose of Institutional Review Board (IRB)
The purpose of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) is to safeguard the rights and well-being of individuals participating in research conducted under the institution's supervision. This administrative body is responsible for thoroughly evaluating all research projects involving human subjects, regardless of funding. Its primary focus is to ensure the protection of participants' welfare, rights, and privacy.
The IRB possesses the authority to approve, exempt, disapprove, monitor, and request modifications for research activities falling within its jurisdiction. This jurisdiction is defined by both federal regulations and institutional policies. To ensure comprehensive and thorough evaluation of human research, the IRB is composed of at least five members from diverse backgrounds. These members possess expertise in institutional, legal, scientific, and social matters. The Board must include at least one member who is unaffiliated with the institution and another who is not a scientist. Additionally, the IRB receives guidance from various consultants who periodically contribute to protocol reviews.
